An initiative to boost the sustainability programs

The LightStay Sustainability feature film award program was presented by Hilton worldwide to spectacular movie, The Island President which was based on the outgoing Maldives President Mohammed Nasheed on his attempts to join hands for the quest of climate change and protect the nation. The popular movie was honored and received accolades at the renowned Sundance film festival in the month of January.

The President had to resign on 7th Feb amongst a lot of commotion and a rebellious coup which demanded the resignation of the former President forcefully. He was the first president who formed a democrat government in Maldives. In an interview with Daily Traveler, he told that he believed in Democracy which brings along policies that are in favor of the nation. Such policies are needed to eliminate any adverse impacts due to climate-change and also focus on human rights. In fact, he had also made a commitment to transform Maldives into a carbon-neutral county by the year 2020. He along with his party was moving on to achieve their objective and the same is expected from the ruling government. Nasheed would be contesting for the next elections which would be held in 2013; however he is trying his best to make them happen sooner i.e. in summers itself.

The LightStay Sustainability Award program plays a premier role in encouraging such documentaries and in collaboration with the Sundance Institute, about 5 documentary film projects would be given grants which have sustainability issues as their key focus.

The program was brought into picture by Hilton which is known to estimate the environmental impacts on the basis of different properties such as energy, water use, wastage and the amount of carbon produced. Besides, it also measures hotel’s operations and related areas. Thus, the program can go a long way in achieving the objectives of sustainability.

One of the most amazing features of the program is the meeting calculator. The specialty about the calculator is that it allows the organizers for any conference to estimate the environmental impacts whenever meetings or conferences are held at Hilton property. In addition to the report there are also tips on how things can be made better and how to minimize the impact.

Climatic change challenge for the Easter bunnies

Easter marks a great day which signifies worship, candies, pagan equinox rituals and so much more. However, the day is not as great for the bunnies as it marks climate change for them. What makes things worse for them is the fact that the climate change has unfavorable effects on at least five rabbit species in Australia and United States.

One of such species is the Lower Keys Marsh rabbit which is a native of Lower Florida Keys. The specialty of this specie is that it is a good swimmer and hails from the cottontail breed. The fact that it is has become an endangered species and the extinction has been triggered due to development and rising sea levels. As per Center for Biological Diversity’s 350 project, the body known to bring into picture the species which are influenced by global warming, a rise of .6 meters would force them to shift their habitat to higher ground and a .9 meter rise would make them extinct completely.

Talking about another species, snowshoe hare, which faces color problems, becomes an easy victim for the predators. Basically, the method of changing the fur color from white to rusty brown acts as a defense against the predators. However, as the days of fall and spring approach, most of the rabbits are left in their white fur hence leaving them unprotected from the ferocious predators. As per Science daily, the phenomenon of color change depends completely on the number of hours of sunlight received.

It is a possibility that some creatures popularly known as American pikas or rock rabbits might become extinct first as a result of climatic change. These are rodent-like creatures and are 7-8 inches in length and can be found in the cool, moist mountains west of the Rocky Mountains. As a result of rise in the temperature, they would escape to higher elevation. However, they already live in the mountaintops at present and hence they would not be able to migrate to any other place. As such it has been reported by National Wildlife Federation that as the temperature level rises up; it would become difficult for them to survive.

Scientists deeply express their concern over the volcano rabbits as well which have their habitat on the volcano slopes. If they would have to move higher, then they might not find proper vegetation and hence this might further pose a question on their population.
